Dear First-Grade ‘Ohana,

- The students have all been using the Smarty Ants program in tech class and I would like to encourage each child to continue to use this individualized reading program at home. I will not be giving assignments in Smarty Ants because the program is tailored to each individual child. However, through my teacher portal I am able to track and monitor their progress. Please try and do SmartyAnts consistently everyday, I recommend between 30-60 minutes depending on your child’s interest and motivation. Here is the link to enter in your child’s log-in information: https://play.smartyants.com/login. Each child should log in with the username of antk2 and their password is their full first name. For example, I would log in as antk2, password: emily. Please let me know if you have any difficulty logging in to the Web site.
- The children will continue to do IXL assignments in math and language. Here are daily assignments for the week of 3/30.

- Each week I will try to include a non-online activity that can be adapted for a home project. The first one has to do with making designs with isosceles triangles, I would love to see pictures of the designs students create! I emailed everybody the file with directions and cut out shapes for this activity. A printer is needed, or you would need to be able to draw your own isosceles triangles for the project.
- I would like all the students to start keeping a journal at home. They can simply record it at home or share with me. They should be familiar with the process as we have done a lot of journaling in class. This week’s journal question is: “What is something that you malama (take care of) at home?” I would love to see the journal entries if you want to snap a pic and send to me!
- I can not stress enough the importance of reading with your child at this time. Please try to spend 30 minutes a day reading with your child. Depending on the level of your child’s reading, you can either assist them as they are sounding out words, or do echo reading in which you read a group of words and your child reads it back to you. If your child is an independent reader, and can do reading on their own, they can use their time to read on their own.
- If you do not have a large home library of books, here is a link to free books on audible that you can play for your students as a read aloud, https://stories.audible.com/discovery.
