In the Classroom:
Welcome back from Fall Break! I have been so impressed in the way the children have settled back into the daily routine of school after a little time to reset during the break. They really haven't missed a beat! This month we have been working on listening, and they have been making great strides in this area! I am truly so proud.
I really enjoyed meeting with all of you during conference time! I feel like I got a better understanding of each of your children, and hope that you got some clarity from me of how they are doing in class.
This past week we have worked on solidifying our addition facts for numbers under 10. The children had a great time playing games to learn their facts. We mainly like to pretend that we are contestants on "Kids Baking Challenge," and they do as many problems as they can until I ring the bell and then they have to freeze. This has become easy for many of them and I have really admired their growth from the beginning of the year when we were focusing on learning the quantities of 10.
We are finishing up learning our study of Zilla, our red-eared slider turtle and now have turned our energy to bats in time for Halloween. We have been reading the book Stellaluna by Janell Cannon for Language Arts, and will be using this for our October theme. Through this book the children have continued learning how to identify the beginning, middle and end of a story, learned about bats, and about being friends with someone who is different then yourself. We are going to be decorating our classroom door with the theme of bat cave this month. The children will be working with our art teacher Kumu Robin to make bats to hang on the door, and I am hoping one of you will donate a large roll of aluminum foil to make the background as well as some large, black sharpie markers. Please let me know if you are able to help. Also, please watch the elementary school Weebly for guidelines about our "Character Day," on October 31.
At many of our conferences, I spoke to you about the importance of reading. I am so thankful to one of our parents, Haley Murphy, for offering to be a Friday afternoon reading volunteer in our class! I am still looking for a volunteer on Wednesdays from 12:15-12:45. Please let me know if you are interested.
We have also begun learning about the value of money by studying coins. The children have been counting all the loose change I have been able to gather. If you have change you would like to donate to our class, we would love to count it, and we will use it to purchase something for our class Star Party, once we earn enough stars to celebrate.
Also, we could really use some tape if you are able to donate so that I can continue to display the children's fabulous work on our classroom walls.
I have also created a funding site on TeachersPayTeachers to get our Language Arts program funded this year. TPT is a great Web site that has many teaching resources in all subjects and grades. We have been using an awesome program called Rooted in Reading. It costs less than $20 a month, but gives the children a month of Language Arts activities as well as introduces them to great books to read! I have bought it the last two months, but this financial cost is adding up, and I would like to be able to continue to use it since the students love it so much.
Here is the link to my site if you are able to contribute to the fund. TPT matches your donation as well!
Aloha,
Ms. Emily
