Aloha First-Grade 'Ohana,
The IXL homework for the week due on Friday, February 7 is as follows:

This is just a reminder that we do have a student with a severe peanut allergy in our classroom. If your child is bringing lunch or snack with peanuts, please remind them to wash their hands after they eat and to make sure to put all trash in the rubbish. Mahalo for your kokua!

February has been designated as "Choose Love" Month. If you did not get a chance to read the school wide announcements for February, here is a recap:
The Choose Love program is the social/emotional program the K-5 students learn about weekly. The program focuses on four important character values – courage, gratitude, forgiveness and compassion – which cultivates optimism, resilience and personal responsibility. We have also added kindness to the list.
Each day, students will be recognized for showing random acts of these character values. While the students will be rewarded daily/weekly for their actions, we hope to create a lifelong learning opportunity for all of our elementary students.
The week of February 10-14 students will be allowed to wear free dress in celebration of Choose Love month:
Monday – Give a hello – wear YELLOW! OR Have your friends back – wear BLACK!
Tuesday – No school
Wednesday – Don’t be mean – wear GREEN!
Thursday – Be true – wear BLUE!
Friday – Only kind words are said – wear RED!
In the classroom
We learned each Hawaiian island's color and lei this morning. We will be learning the Hawaiian color song this week as well, as well as continuing to learn basic hula steps.
In Math, we are learning about three-dimensional shapes and we used toothpicks and play dough to build a cone, sphere and a rectangular prism. We will also be learning about pyramids, cylinders and cubes. For all shapes we are learning about, we are counting edges, vertices and faces.
In Language Arts, we are reading the book Cloudette by Tom Litchenheld. It is a book about a very small could who looks high and low for a way to do something very big. On her journey she discovers new friends, new adventures and her own silver lining. We will be using this book to do our ELA lessons this week, but it also ties in nicely to this month's theme of "Choose Love." We are focusing on the -ent/est word families in phonics.
In Science/social studies, we are continuing to study space systems. We will be discussing the questions that the children came up with last week in class. Please make sure your child has enough knowledge to participate in a discussion answering one of the questions. There is no writing component to this assignment unless a child would like to bring in a picture or some notes to remind themselves of what they learned. Here are the questions:
Aloha, Ms. Emily
