THURSDAY MORNING VIRTUAL IS POSTED BELOW
EDIT: We will return to Ms. Ehrlich's way of assigning iReady homework as of this week. So, before next Tuesday (1/19), students should finish at least 1 hour and 30 minutes of iReady Reading. That would be between one (long) and four (short) lessons. I can see your time on task so keep that in mind. Next week we will do math the same way.
BRING YOUR LIBRARY CARDS TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY!
Monday Virtual
There are two assignments today!
First, you will write a five paragraph, double spaced essay chronicling what you did over winter break. This will be a rough draft so it does not need to be perfect but we will be editing it in class tomorrow so it MUST be done! Your essay should be hand-written; we will type them later. This will give you a lot of good handwriting practice (an important skill even with today’s technology) and give me the opportunity to see who needs more handwriting practice. Please also check your spelling!
Requirements:
- FIVE paragraphs with an introduction, THREE body paragraphs, and a conclusion
- All paragraphs will begin with an indent (a larger space before the first word)
- Each body paragraph should have at least FOUR sentences
- At least THREE time ordered transitions such as first, next, then, after, etc. (Use the handout from Friday and here's another link: http://www.readingrockets.org/content/pdfs/transition%20words.pdf, “Words or phrases to show time”)

I can’t wait to hear all about what you did over break!
Second, this week we will begin independent reading of chapter books. Together we will look at the elements of a story, such as setting, characters, conflict, climax, and resolution. We will go to the library on Wednesday but it will be a lot easier if each student can bring in a book from home.
Books must be multiple chapters, preferably fiction, and within your reading range. Students CANNOT choose a book they have already read or Dear Mr. Henshaw (as we will read this later in the year).
Look at the following link to choose a book. These are not the only books you can choose from but it is a very good list.

Once you decide which book you want to read, send me an email (from your student kiheicharter.org email address if possible) with the name and author’s name so that I may approve of the book. YOU MUST HAVE AN APPROVED BOOK IN YOUR POSSESSION BY THURSDAY!
Tuesday, 8:55-2:35
We will edit our winter break essays and start to type them. Please check know how to access your own kiheicharter.org email address so that you can use Google Docs in class. Essays are DUE on Friday!
Wednesday, 8:55-1:30
We will go to Kalama Park for lunch and then to the library. If you do not have your library card, please get one before Wednesday!
Homework: Please complete 45 minutes (at least 1 full lesson) of Reading iReady. Do not start this until Wednesday.
Use this timer to stay on task for the full 45 minutes!

- \After you’ve answered the question in the Resolution section, click “next” for a final assessment on all the elements. You will answer 14 questions then click “See your results.” A new tab will open with your results.
