Please make sure you have paid for your student (and you if you want to chaperone) for the upcoming whale watch on 2/28. You must pay by February 20th at the middle school front desk. After you have paid, PLEASE EMAIL ME!
NO SCHOOL on Wednesday, February 15th and Monday, February 20th.
Book Mobile coming on Tuesday, February 14th.
Lastly, go to PowerSchool with your parents and check your grades. If you notice anything missing or incomplete, parents email me so I can work on this with you before I go on maternity leave. This is important because I will not be able to change grades once I’m gone.
HOMEWORK THIS WEEK: 60 minutes of iReady MATH.
Today you have 5 assignments.
This week we will start our 2 hours of iReady per week. One (above) will be a weekly assignment like always. The other will need to be completed each Monday. They will both be entered into the gradebook by the next Tuesday. Grading will be the same but please do not spend extra time on this assignment until after you have completed the other assignments first (or do this assignment last!).
So, first, TODAY, complete 60 minutes of iReady READING!
Second, go to Kid Biz and complete the lesson called “Three People Who Changed the World.” This is a great article for Black History Month!
- Complete the first FIVE tabs (Before Reading Poll through Thought Question).
- The Thought Question is you chance to write about what you’ve read. We will do at least one Thought Question per month. I will grade it and award extra points for great essays! This could take up to 30 minutes to answer the Thought Question correctly (it IS an essay after all).
- BEFORE you write, you will need to read over “Include in your Answer.
- For example, in “Three People Who Changed the World” you will need to compare and contrast two people. This is an example but it will change according to your lexile level.
- Write two paragraphs. (ONE COMPARE PARAGRAPH, ONE CONTRAST PARAGRAPH)
- Introduce the topic; group related information together. (MAIN IDEA SENTENCE IN EACH PARAGRAPH)
- Make points with facts, definitions, and details. (USE VOCAB WORDS AND EVIDENCE FROM THE ARTICLE)
- Use linking words and phrases (e.g., also, another, and, more, but) to connect ideas. (TRANSITION WORDS)
- Include an ending statement or section. (CONCLUSION SENTENCE)
- Use the words civil rights and freedom, if you can. (DO THIS!)
Third, choose your OWN lesson on Kid Biz. Remember not to pick on that says “Article Only” or “Writing Center.”
- Your lexile levels have changed and the articles should be more on your level! Great work in January, let's see how much improvement we can make in February!
- Complete the first FOUR tabs and don’t forget that you CAN look at the other tabs for more info and learning!
Fourth, in your journal with your best handwriting, make LONG sentences using BOTH the homophones in one sentence (and all the review words together). Use transition words, adjectives, and adverbs. The longer the better! Use THIS dictionary to check the definitions of the words. You should have 12 numbered sentences. If you need to make two sentences, that’s ok but they should be about the same topic.
***(MY EXAMPLE: The horse’s voice was incredibly hoarse after neighing and whinnying all night long because he was afraid of the fox who was sneaking around in his barn.)
- horse, hoarse
- close clothes
- course coarse
- chili chilly
- beat beet
- I'll aisle
- cents sense
- seller cellar
- eight ate
- need knead
- disgust discussed
- tomorrow morning nature
Last, write a final draft of your Makahiki speeches on a small piece of paper you can hold while you present. You can print it if you like.
- Also, prepare any supplies you will need to bring in, including visual aids! This is all due tomorrow!
- Practice your speech aloud because we will be presenting to other classes this week!
- Project managers, send emails to your group to be sure all is prepared!
- All group members, be sure to check your email.
See you tomorrow!
