Aloha Families,
As a reminder this week we will hold parent teacher conferences. Students in grades K-6 will be dismissed at noon each day that week. There will not be aftercare during this week.
The week of October 7th is Fall Break, classes will resume on Tuesday October 15th.
The Book It program will begin this month. Students are encouraged to read as much as they can during the month in order to earn a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Students will keep a monthly tracking sheet in their purple take home folders. Students should read daily and track their progress. At the end of the month I will collect the parent signed tracking sheet and issue the certificates!
Scholastic Book Club is starting up as well this month. Students will be sent home with flyers Monday September 30, 2019. Please take a moment and look over the flyers, you can also find additional titles online. Scholastic is a great opportunity to extend a child's love of reading. In addition I often find better prices on the books through the book club then what is offered locally. Please note that the school does not accept money for book ordering and all ordering should be done online via the classroom code found on the fliers. The books will be sent to the classroom and we will distribute to students. Due to fall break we are asking that all orders be placed by this Friday October 4th in order for students to receive the books when they return from the break. Please check your students purple folder for the flier and additional details.
Reminder: Students are now able to use the Vocabulary Spelling City website. The program as an app as well. Student log in cards can be found in their purple take home folders. Students can go to https://www.spellingcity.com/ and login in for at home practice any time during the week.
If your student was absent on picture day, retakes are scheduled for November 15th.
In The Classroom:
Make sure to congratulate your student on a job well done on last weeks end of unit math test! All students did a fantastic job!
In our classroom this week we will focus on writing. Students will be introduced to persuasive writing styles. In an effort to combine reading and opinion writing students will examine books they have read or that they are currently reading. Students will be asked to think more specifically and critically about what makes a particular book a favorite book. Students will then analyze characters, the author's intent and other aspects of the book in order to “sell” the book to a friend.
We will not have new spelling words this week, therefore we will not be having a spelling test on Friday.
Please make sure students read for at least 20 min. a day, and track the information on their book it tracking forms.
