Aloha 4th Grade Ohana,
This past week was a very productive week for our 4th grade class. In addition to completing their bridge projects, we had a successful beach cleanup at Waiehu Beach last Wednesday. As Ms. Bridget shared on class dojo, we are participating in the ‘Art of the Sphere’ contest hosted by the Maui Ocean Center in celebration of the 1st Anniversary of the Humpback of Hawaiʻi Exhibit and Sphere. We’ll be using items collected from the beach cleanup to create a replica of the sphere and decorate it. The theme of this art piece is what Malama i ke kai (take care of the ocean) means to the students. I will be submitting the art piece this Friday, January 7th.
Math Class
This past week we began our division unit review. We started off with dividing 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. This week we’ll review dividing of 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. This Wednesday there will be a quiz on last week's math review concepts.
Students have the opportunity to work on IXL assignments in class during math centers. If IXL assignments aren't completed in class then they will need to be completed at home.
Math Homework:
-IXL: Division E1, E2, E3, E4 due by the end of Sunday, February 9thth (Posted on Google classroom)
-I encourage students to continue memorizing multiplication times tables (0-12). Below I've linked some fun games that use multiplication flash cards to try at home.

Just like learning to walk before you can run, learning multiplication and memorizing the times tables are key building blocks for other math topics including division, fractions and algebra.
Science Class:
This past week students completed building their bridges. At the beginning of the week we tested each bridge to see if they could withstand a minimum load of 50 pennies. All of the bridges surpassed a minimum load of 50 pennies with some being able to withstand 400 pennies! Students then went back to the drawing board of the engineering design process and made improvements to their bridges for the final load test this week.
This week we’ll be wrapping up our engineering unit activity. We’ll have a final test at the beginning of this week using weights to determine the maximum load for each bridge.
Classroom Supply Request list:
-large erasers
-scotch tape
-graph paper
-binder paper
-disinfectant wipes
-paper towels
Mahalo,
